Lessons from a salesman for online shop gratification

These are by far the "best" questions and comments from a salesman: <br> "Can I help you?" . I’m just 2 meters into the store! <br> "What's your budget?" . Calm down; I'm still in my exploration phase. <br> "Good choice, I use it at home myself". Yeah right. <br> "Shall I make you a special offer?". Well... what do you think? <br> "Why don’t you sleep on it. I'll call you tomorrow okay?" That’s a little pushy my friend. I want to spend my money well. <br> "I can imagine that you're looking for something new". Please, show some respect for my old car / kitchen / tv-set.

A standard manual for a customized cabinet?

To build standard cabinets with a standard manual is not fun yet, but a nice size box with a standard manual - find the differences - certainly a "Swedish furniture trauma". Acceptably maybe during a rainy weekend for a convenient family as time does not matter. Bothering, if threatening, if your business model is aimed at consumers or retailers themselves putting together their flatpack products. You can already make a presentation of the kind of helpdesk you need to set up and that for a 24/7 service. And then we do not even talk about customer returns based on: "The product was already damaged when we unpacked it."

8 trends to know before you buy a new CNC machine

Investments in capital goods such as production machinery require some thinking ahead. Is it a strategic acquisition which enables making more complex products with more margin, or are you aiming for <link https: en.wikipedia.org wiki quick_response_manufacturing>Quick Response Manufacturing (QRM) where lead time reduction and reduction of inventories play a role? Ultimately, the return on investment (ROI) of such machines depends on more factors than price and yield alone. For the furniture industry, computer controlled woodworking machines have become commonplace. If you are thinking about replacement or expansion here are the main trends that you should take into consideration when buying.

IMM 2016 Congress Online Furniture trade

21 January was the annual congress IMM in Cologne dedicated to trends and prospects for the German and international online trade. Major players in the German e-commerce market, gave their insights and experiences for some 200 participants from mostly European furniture industry. The most striking conclusion: the online market for furniture is, according to the experts, on the verge of a boom similar to that of fashion but with an important difference; the margins are clearly attractive in the furniture market.

Shoppers are choosing experiences over stuff, and that’s bad news for retailers

Younger consumers are especially prone to spending on experiences, according to a PwC survey published last year, which found that millennials said that more than half (52%) of their holiday spending would be experience-related, compared to 39% for older consumers. Even Nordstrom, a department store widely seen as the odd strong man in that space, attributed weak Q3 sales on unexpected poor traffic.

How will you look back on 2016 in one year?

Trends and numbers of 2015 can help you to push the right buttons in the coming year. 2015 for many in the furniture industry was the year when some signals went to green. We need this upswing to develop new perspectives again. We have put together a few highlights in a list for you.

We all love manuals, right?

You ordered the new TV-set on the internet and it is delivered in a nice big box. You unpack it, connect the TV and, shoot, the screen remains black. All family members look expectantly at you: you will surely solve this for us? You show your paternal face and try to radiate confidence, but in your mind there are serious doubts.

7 Things to Know about the Internet of Things and Industry 4.0

The Internet of Things and Industry 4.0 are not hypes anymore. In this article of Modern Machine Shop, Mark Albert , Editor-in-Chief the not-so-distant future of Shop floor automation and the open interaction, with its merites and dangers, that lays ahead.

Shoot, I have to tell the customer that his order has changed.

In the retail sector nothing is more frustrating than a customer order on which the supplier reports “Sorry discontinuation, we can not supply you”. For example, because a part is out of stock, or that a material color is discontinued. The scenario in the store is easy to imagine: the consumer finally has ordered -preceded by a number of beautiful quotations with drawings where a lot work has been put in- and the supplier says after a few days after order entry: Beware! This critical part is no longer available or is replaced by etc ... Are you going to cancel the hard-won order or go back in the battle with the customer to get the customized order changed?

Why, when looking at E-Commerce, Furniture manufacturers shouldn't look away but engage.

Good choice of topics, brisk discussions, important aspects and inspirational for your own online presence - that is the conclusion of the participants of the „Entdeckungsreise ins Online-Geschäft“ (English, „Expedition into online business“) with this headline 50 furniture manufacturers met up to discuss the options and opportunities in the internet. Herr Dr. Olaf Plümer, President of the VHK welcomed their members to the MARTa in Herford for a diverse information packed afternoon.

LIGNA 2015: showcases for Integrated Manufacturing in Woodworking industry

The largest exhibition for the woodprocessing industry LIGNA in Hannover has its doors closed. In 5 days time, some 96,000 visitors registered with the emphasis on the first three days just prior to Ascension. High on the agenda was Industry 4.0, exhibited in a number of relevant examples such as the RFID Factory with integrated solutions through radio-frequency identification tags. Numdata was one of the participants of the RFID Factory, and presented its new 3D lightweight online configurator "Ivenza Mobile" for iPads, tablets and smartphones.

Speeding up CNC-manufacturing by working parallel

Hello and welcome to this Tech Video. This time I’d like to talk about accelerating production, and show you a specific example in Ivenza. Every production manager wants his production to be efficient and fast. Faster manufacturing means more products per day, shorter lead times and normally reduced cost per product. Since the <link http: en.wikipedia.org wiki theory_of_constraints>Theory of Constraints of Goldratt, we know that speed-ups on machines that are not a bottleneck, are meaningless. The bottleneck machine is the slowest machine in the process. Typical of a bottleneck machine is that work piles up in front of that machine. In order to accelerate production, you need to focus primarily on the bottleneck. So how do you increase the speed of the bottleneck?

Operator support on shop floor with Job Shop Applications

Hello and welcome to our tech video. Our customers want more and more individual design. This means small lot sizes. And for smaller lotsizes you need longer set-up or changeover times of machines. Reducing lotsizes means more paperwork for operators. Paperwork such as work sheets that explain extensively what needs to be done just to operate this part.

User engagement and co-creation of furniture

It began, a little odd, on a Sunday afternoon. They missed the healthy tension of the week, but were happy that they did not have to keep an eye on their mailboxes and phones. A day that with no pressing tasks. But it tickled that tension. Because something had to happen. But what? You can also put yourself in a creative mood. Moving to a state of mind that forces you to do somehting. Put on the PC and go online to do some sketches. No CAD please, but design freely because you do not know where you end up. And somewhere on that afternoon, an unguarded moment, Jeroen and Frank got the basic idea. After that there was no stopping him. Ideas and hunches tumbled over each other. A few days later, a prototype was build. Received good feedback from users, especially what could be better and beautified. Then early adopters were interested and payed real money for a product that actually, in Jeroen and Frank's opinion, was not finished. And finally, after several months at exhibitions in Paris and Brussels, successfully market your products in Europe.

Don't waste a good crisis: 10 reasons to deploy product configurators

Since the financial crisis, we have 'rediscovered' our end users. But because of that renewed interest in the end user, we often come to the conclusion that we know very little of that user. We are only mildly interested in the client: He should not just cause havoc overthrowing our production machine with its well greased cogs, just because he likes to change the beautiful new product that was launched without customer interference. But to be honest, that ignorance of what those demanding -if not overdemanding- customers want, is also to blame. That customer does in fact different things than what he says to do. And sometimes he is doing things that he is not even aware of and which still heavily affecting his selections and purchasing. How do you as a manufacturer regain control? This can be done by use of product configurators that integrate seamlessly with a highly automated production. Time to change tactics with the motto "Do not waste a good crisis."

Made-to-measure thanks to software with a straight eye

Laboriously an employee maneuvers a platform between stacks of boards and machines in the JéWé factory in Gorinchem, a company that makes cabinets, among other things. The man installs tubes with wiring and cables. "To connect to the Internet," director Jan-Willem Smits explains. "Wifi usually doesn't work very well in these environments."

Mass Customization: answers and solutions for a non-polluted order book despite increasing customer-specific needs and desires

New orders are always welcome and preferably as many as possible. But complex orders or tailored orders lead to inconvenience and hassle, which can result in repair and rework. Do we really want these types of orders? Common ways of placing orders such as paper order forms are ideal for customers to pass variants and anomalies along. For example as a customer, you only need to strike through the three possible colors, and write down your desired deviating color. And of course the customer expects that the standard delivery time will be maintained for this unique order. But stop! If we have a website for placing orders, we avoid that problem because "our customer can't order outside the web form." Well, that remains to be seen. Either the customer leaves the site without ordering -and worse, he's going to the competitor- or he orders the standard product and uses the comments section of the web form: "Please do not deliver in red but green !!". One thing is certain: the chance of a disgruntled ex-client or an unprofitable order is significant. In this blog: answers and solutions for a non-polluted order book despite increasing customer-specific needs and desires.

Industry 4.0: how a customer controls the vertical chain

Industry 4.0 is an initiative of the German government to encourage and foster the 4th Industrial Revolution for traditional industries such as manufacturing. The goal is a comprehensive integration of production processes between different companies in the vertical chain. This is done by machines and computers communicating with each other at operational and tactical levels. By providing more data and make data available faster in the complete chain, manufacturing processes can be executed much more intelligent. <link http: en.wikipedia.org wiki industry_4.0>Industry 4.0 ensures that customers are increasingly getting direct influence on the product and the its manufacturing process. In the Netherlands we have a nice real-world 4.0 example that is exposed in this blog.

DTAP for releasing new software versions

Anyone who has complex software systems in use or is engaged in software development will recognize this: that small undetected bug or that particular interface that is just not adapted, leads to very unforeseen consequences, eg in the form of damage, reduced reliability and quality. Extremely annoying for users, customers and software suppliers. Often quickly repaired, but it would have been better to avoid this defect in the first place. So the question is how can you guarantee the quality of releasemanagement of new software versions. With DTAP a method is available that specifically attempts to bring these problems to attention much earlier.
